Concert and masterclasses in Colombia
Sunday 9 March 2025
Those past weeks have been really intense, during my second visit to Colombia (the first one was a year ago in 2024) I managed to during one week give fours masterclasses at three different universities, and on top of that also squeeze in a solo concert.
The first stop was in the capital of Colombia, Bogotá, where I held two different masterclasses: one at Universidad de los Andes and one at Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
I had the opportunity to meet eight talented young pianists in two beautiful halls, the first at Universidad de los Andes was a newly built and very nice Recital Hall, and the second one was nothing less then the biggest hall in the whole of Colombia: fantastic Léon de Greiff Auditorium with an acoustic to die for and 1700 seats! If I need to pick something to mention during the masterclasses there was a really amazing performance of Chopin Ballade no. 4 in F minor, played at a level that for me would do very well anywhere in the world.
My third and fourth masterclasses were both at Universidad de Antioquia in Medellín, where I met ten pianists with whom it was a real pleasure to work, also in the presence of my dear colleagues Ana Maria Orduz, head of the piano departement, and Diego Arango Toro.
The repertoire during the masterclasses consisted of the music of mainly three famous composers: Beethoven, Chopin and Mozart. We also in Medellín had a digital meeting between some of my Swedish piano students and Colombian pianist, very interesting to hear the conversation why everyone started to play the piano and how a regular music working week looks for everyone.
In Medellín I also had the pleasure to perform a solo recital in the Theatre of Universidad de Antioquia (700 seats) with the following program:
– Björn J.son Lindh: Brusa högre lilla å (Sing louder little river)
– Alexandre Scriabin: Etudes op. 8 no. 1 C sharp major and no. 3 B minor, op. 42 no. 5 C sharp minor
– William Bolcom: Graceful Ghost Rag from 3 Ghost Rags
– Wilhelm Stenhammar: Fantasie B minor op. 11 no. 1
– Maurice Ravel: Pavane pour une infante défunte
– Felix Mendelssohn/Sergei Rachmaninov: Scherzo from ”A Midsummer Night’s Dream”
I was very happy to be able to attract over 300 listeners, a great audience to play for and talk with between the pieces!
I big thanks to Ana Maria Orduz for inviting me back to Faculdad des Artes at Universidad de Antioquia and to my former student Jonathan Söderlund for help with arranging the masterclasses in Bogotá!
I also would like to extend a warm thank you to all students and teachers that I met during my week in Colombia, such a pleasure to meet and work together!
