Masterstudent Julia Thuvesen in New York

During this week my piano student in the first year of the Master’s Program, Julia Thuvesen, has been in New York to visit my Alma Mater Stony Brook University and its Music Department, but of course also to see the Big Apple.
Some questions to Julia and her answers:
What attracts you the most about New York?
The most attractive thing about New York is that it is such an incredibly diverse city in every way. It really feels like EVERYTHING is there, not least the mix of cultures which is probably what interests me the most. Then it is also a huge center for the classical music scene, which of course becomes an inspiring environment for a student.
And what do you think of the city now after your last visit?
There is a lot that is absolutely amazing, the first night I was at an incredible production of La Bohème at The Met which was absolutely amazing! It’s also so fun to see people who radiate open-mindedness and are generally very outgoing, which I can sometimes miss here in Sweden. Everything generally feels very big, lively and fun!
However, it is important to mention that I have definitely had a romanticized view of the city. For those who are used to how well we have it in Sweden, I was a little shocked at how evident the homelessness and drug abuse was. It was horrible and eye-opening to see.
What was it like visiting Stony Brook? And how was it to meet Tina, Gil and others?!
Stony Brook was exciting, I didn’t really know what to expect and have never been to an American university before. It was funny that it looked quite similar to the movies, big football field and lots of athletes, etc. Very large area and incredibly many international students, which is great fun! Tina was very nice and you noticed right away that she was a popular person at school. During a 30-minute conversation, probably ten people came and wanted to talk to her about different things. It was cool to meet Gil as well and hear him talk about Beethoven, various concerts he had recently, etc.
Are you more or less keen to study at Stony Brook now after the visit?!
I think it’s about the same actually! However, I got the impression that the competition is tough, I received more specifically an exact number of this year’s applicants to MM, and the number of places is few. But I think it would have been a very fun environment to study in and the students I met seemed happy and satisfied!
I’m very happy that Julia went to New York and I wish her the best of luck with the upcoming auditions to Stony Brook!

Masterstudent Julia Thuvesen in New York
Under den här veckan har min pianostudent som går första året på MOMDUs nya masterprogram, Julia Thuvesen, varit i New York för att besöka mitt Alma Mater Stony Brook University och dess musikavdelning, och såklart också för att uppleva the Big Apple version 2025. Hon fick även chans att träffa min lärare Christina ’Tina’ Dahl och även Gilbert ’Gil’ Kalish, två fantastiska pianister och lärare!
Några frågor till Julia och även hennes svar:
Vad är det som lockar mest med New York?
Det som lockar mest med New York är att det är en så otroligt mångsidig stad på alla sätt. Det känns verkligen som att ALLT finns där, inte minst blandningen av kulturer som nog är det som intresserar mig mest. Sedan är det också ett enormt centrum för den klassiska musikscenen, vilket såklart blir en inspirerande miljö för en student.
Och vad tycker du om staden nu efter senaste besöket?
Det är mycket som är helt otroligt, första kvällen var jag på en otrolig uppsättning av La Bohème på The Met vilket var helt amazing! Det är också så roligt att se människor som utstrålar öppensinnighet och generellt är väldigt utåtriktade, vilket jag kan sakna ibland hos oss i Sverige. Allt känns överlag väldigt stort, livfullt och kul typ!
Dock är det viktigt att nämna att jag definitivt har haft en romantiserad bild av staden. För den som är van vid hur bra vi har det i Sverige så fick jag en liten chock över hur påtaglig hemlösheten och drogmissbruket var. Det var hemskt och ögonöppnande att se.
Hur var det att besöka Stony Brook? Och hur var det att möta Tina, Gil och andra?!
Stony Brook var spännande, jag visste inte riktigt vad jag skulle förvänta mig och har aldrig varit på ett amerikanskt universitet innan. Det var roligt att det såg ganska likt ut som i filmer, stor football field och massa atleter o.s.v. Väldigt stort område och otroligt mycket internationella studenter, vilket är jättekul! Tina var jättetrevlig och man märkte direkt att hon var en populär person på skolan. Under ett 30 min samtal så kom det nog tio stycken och ville prata med henne om olika saker. Det var häftigt att träffa Gil också och höra honom prata om Beethoven, olika konserter han hade haft nyligen m.m.
Är du mer eller mindre sugen på att studera vid Stony Brook nu efter besöket?!
Jag tror det är ungefär samma faktiskt! Dock fick jag ett intryck av att konkurrensen är tuff, jag fick närmare bestämt ett exakt antal på årets sökande till MM, och antalet platser är få. Men jag tror det hade varit en väldigt rolig miljö att studera i och de studenterna jag träffade verkade glada och nöjda!
Jag är väldigt glad att Julia åkte över till New York och jag önskar henne all lycka till med provspelningen till Stony Brook!
