The artistic musical work is in full swing at MOMDH and music pours out of the rooms at V\u00e4ster\u00e5s Castle both day and night. A number of different musical preparations coincide; for the semester’s new chamber music ensembles, preparations for upcoming graduation concerts in May for final year students and also for various auditions to competitions and advanced courses and programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At yesterday’s joint lesson with all my nine pianists, it started out with something of a Liszt cavalcade. First out we listened to a performance of the extremely dramatic Ballade no. 2, which was then followed by three etudes: Transcendental Etude no. 10 in f-minor and two of the three Concert Etudes: La Leggierezza and Un Sospiro. In the ensuing discussion, we talked about Liszt as a true cosmopolitan and touring virtuoso, but also about his enormous interest in art, literature and religious topics. Another reflection was that among the cascades of notes there is often an exquisite melody, and the shaping of these melodies is at least as important as dealing with all the more bravura-technical challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then there was a sudden change in program to works of J. S. Bach, here the students performed Sinfonia no. 14 in B major, Preludium in C minor and Prelude and Fugue in C major from Book II and Book I, respectively, from Das Wohltemperierte Klavier. Here we talked about the importance of finding the right transparency in the sound of polyphonic compositions so that the different voices are not cloggeds together, but also how to think as vocally and horizontally as possible. And a philosophical moment about the challenge of both memorizing and performing complicated fugues!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a conclusion, we listened to Ravel’s magical Une Barque sur l\u2019Ocean from Miroirs, with its glitter of light, its bells and the glorious water waves that literally wash over the listeners. Here the challenge for the pianist is to keep sound control of the different layers, but also to profile the different sections of the piece and show the narrative thread in the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Det konstn\u00e4rliga musikaliska arbetet \u00e4r i full g\u00e5ng vid MOMDH och musik fl\u00f6dar ut ur rummen p\u00e5 V\u00e4ster\u00e5s slott b\u00e5de dag och natt. Flitens lampa lyser i en m\u00e4ngd olika musikaliska f\u00f6rberedelser f\u00f6r terminens nya kammarmusikensembler, f\u00f6rberedelser inf\u00f6r stundande examenskonsert i maj f\u00f6r sista\u00e5rsstudenterna och \u00e4ven olika auditions till t\u00e4vlingar och vidareutbildningar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n P\u00e5 g\u00e5rdagens gemensamma lektion med alla nio pianister blev det f\u00f6rst n\u00e5got av en Liszt-kavalkad. F\u00f6rst ut var den ytterst dramatiska Ballade nr. 2, som sedan f\u00f6ljdes av tre etyder: Transcendental etyd nr. 10 i f-moll samt tv\u00e5 av tre konsertetyder: La Leggierezza och Un Sospiro. I den efterf\u00f6ljande diskussionen pratade vi om Liszt roll som kosmopolit och turnerande virtuos, men ocks\u00e5 hans enorma intresse f\u00f6r konst, litteratur och religi\u00f6sa fr\u00e5gor. Och att bland tonkaskaderna finns ofta en uts\u00f6kt formad melodi, och att det konstn\u00e4rliga utformandet av den \u00e4r av minst lika viktigt som att hantera alla tekniska utmaningar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sedan blev det en snabb omst\u00e4llning till n\u00e5gra Bach-verk d\u00e4r studenterna bj\u00f6d p\u00e5 Sinfonia nr. 14 i Bb-dur, Preludium i c#-moll och Preludium och Fuga i C#-dur ur bok II respektive bok I av Das Wohltemperierte Klavier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n H\u00e4r pratade vi om vikten av att i polyfoniska kompositioner hitta lagom transparens i klangen f\u00f6r att st\u00e4mmorna inte ska klumpas ihop, men ocks\u00e5 hur det kan hj\u00e4lpa att t\u00e4nka s\u00e5 vokalt och horisontalt som m\u00f6jligt. Och en filosofisk stund \u00e4ven om utmaningen av att b\u00e5de memorera och framf\u00f6ra komplicerade fugor!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Som avslutning fick vi lyssna till Ravels magiska Une Barque sur l\u2019Ocean ur Miroirs, med sitt ljusglitter, sina klockor och de h\u00e4rliga vattenv\u00e5gorna som formligen sk\u00f6ljer \u00f6ver publiken.
